Deck Design Ideas

When you’ve decided to have a new deck built, whether through necessity or choice, here are some deck design options to consider.

First, do you like the shape and size of your current deck? Do you want to stick with the same rectangular deck or perhaps have a new deck with more interest, some angles, some different areas for specific uses? A basic deck is fine, it still allows you to get outside and enjoy your yard and world, but a deck that fits your lifestyle is better, do you like to have gatherings around a fireplace, an area to grill tasty foods and eat them, a separate areas for kids and adults, a covered deck area to allow deck use throughout the year? All of these and more are important questions as you consider the deck design of your new deck or decks.

Next, in the deck design process, is materials. The structure of your deck should always be pressure treated lumber or other rot/decay/bug resistant materials. There ar more environmentally friendly choices available such as TimberSil, which is silica impregnated yellow pine, it will last virtually forever and also accepts paint or stain.

The materials choices for the surfaces of your deck are many. From cedar, tight knot or clear grain to a plethora of composite materials, to solid non-skid water-proof surfaces to aluminum decking, which provides a solid water proof deck surface that will last longer than you will. The deck surface that is best for you and your deck depends upon a number of factors. Do you like, or are willing , to do regular maintenance? Would you prefer a deck that is basically maintenance free? Your budget and how long you’ll be in your house and/or when you would like to upgrade to a larger or different deck.
